Pavement In The Summer Heat

In Asphalt, Concrete, Latest News, Site Work

We’ve had a lot of rain recently, as we discussed here. The counterpoint to all the recent rain we’ve had is now there’s a high pressure zone sitting over the state. This keeps the rain and cooler temperatures away creating our typical Gulf Coast summers. Hot and dry, this weather can be the cause of significant damage to your pavement in the summer heat.

Rainy Days and Heat Waves
Rain water and cooler temps can cause expansion, cracking and potholes. Dry and hot weather, on the other hand, can cause the ground to dry out, contract, crack and break.
A combination of weather, with periods of rainy days and heat waves can wreak havoc on your paved surface. We’ve see it too many times when we’re called in to do an asphalt repair job or replace a concrete driveway that has fallen into disrepair. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to help prevent and stave off some of the more preventable damage.

A Strong Foundation
The first steps to preventing many problems with your paved surface is ensuring the ground has been properly prepared. In the Greater Houston Area, you can see many different soil, clay and dirt mixtures in close proximity. What does that mean? It means you need a paving company that has experience dealing with the variables and an understanding of how to prepare each for longevity and strength. While there will always be some amount of washout in the rain and contraction in the summer heat, a properly graded and engineered site will withstand the forces of mother nature much better than a site that was prepared with the lowest budget in mind.
