Asphalt vs Concrete Pt.2
Durability of asphalt and concrete is a significant factor when choosing a paving surface. Each have their pros and cons. Picking the proper surface will be determined by needs of your particular project.
Asphalt will typically wear down sooner than a comparable concrete surface over time. The good news is that asphalt is usually cheaper than concrete and can be easily patched and maintained. However, cost and ease of maintenance can not be the only considerations.
Concrete is more durable
Concrete is much more durable with a longer wear life and much more resistant to fuel and chemical spills which might normally break down asphalt bonders. Many concrete surfaces are reinforced with a steel rebar giving it rigidity and tremendous strength. Asphalt uses petroleum based binders which can soften in warm weather and become brittle in cold weather increasing the chance of cracks and potholes.
Asphalt is easier to maintain
Since asphalt is created from a gooey mass of aggregate and liquified petroleum binders, it’s simple to introduce a quick patch to fill cracks and potholes. This is a relatively simple and quick process that can be repeated many times on the original surface. Concrete, on the other hand, must be completely removed and replaced if breaks or cracks render the surface unusable or unsafe.
For the eco-friendly
In this modern age, being aware of our social and political climate, choosing the ‘greener’ option can be a good move. When comparing the eco-benefits of asphalt vs concrete, we see that concrete comes out head and shoulders above asphalt. Due to it’s petroleum base, asphalt ends up producing many toxic gasses during the heating of the bitumen binders. Concrete by comparison uses abundantly available limestone and water which is much more friendly for the earth.
Special Considerations
Picking between asphalt and concrete is not as simple as looking at the durability and maintenance. The type of activity, environment and traffic, among many other factors, on your paved surface will determine the best application for your needs.
